Without warning and without mercy a crisis can strike. Anytime and anywhere. Often the hardest part of recovery is rebuilding community activity and wellbeing once first-responders have moved on. Restoring schooling, especially at early childhood level, is critical. Why? Because when a child is able to return to school, the community ecosystem operationally, financially, and emotionally is reactivated, keeping families and communities safe, strong and hopeful. We as a global community live in unique, increasingly challenging times. Interconnected today by technology, opportunity, curiosity and mobility, what happens in one part of the world impacts us all. Especially, as seen in 2020 and into 2021, when a crisis hits. A crisis can come in many forms: natural disasters, political and economic instability, terrorism. But regardless of the type of crisis, those affected are left to pick up the pieces and try to return to normal life.
Whether witnessing events a world away through television, mobile or other screens, or those right nearby, to watch people and places suffering stirs an immediate desire to do something, anything, to help in any way that we can. Especially when the most vulnerable – children – are involved. We cannot stand by and watch.
Timing, however, is crucial. Entry into a crisis response situation needs careful analysis, thoughtful action, and sustainable intent. Going into countries, cities, or communities too quickly can often cause more disruption and distraction for affected communities, on top of dealing with the crisis itself.
After the first-responders have fulfilled their objectives of rebuilding core infrastructure – water, electrification, sanitation, basic accommodation, they must leave. At this moment, communities are often left facing the challenge of repairing the trauma to the fabric of their lives and livelihoods. Return to schooling is absolutely critical because not only is a child able to resume a momentum of education, but they are also able to resume momentum of social engagement. This unlocks the ability for their families and their communities to regain momentum of working life required to keep families and communities safe, strong and hopeful.
The Anita Mendiratta Foundation works with on-the-ground organisations in affected communities with long-term projects that support communities where they need it most. This is where we believe we can make a meaningful, sustainable difference.
