REBUILDING EDUCATION IN NEPAL: A Response to the November 2023 Earthquake
Street Child
Project Overview
In response to the devastating earthquake that struck Nepal in November 2023, The Anita Mendiratta Foundation has partnered with Street Child to help rebuild critical educational infrastructure. Over 300 schools were destroyed in the disaster, leaving thousands of children without access to safe learning environments. To address this urgent need, we are funding the construction of a Transitional Learning Centre (TLC) and a Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) facility at Shiva Shankar Basic School in Nalgad Municipality, one of the worst-hit areas.
This project will serve 500 children, ensuring they can continue their education in a safe and supportive environment. The TLC will provide children, particularly those between the ages of 4 and 10, with a secure space to learn, play, and grow. Education at this stage is critical for their personal development, and the new facilities will restore much-needed stability to their lives after the trauma of the earthquake. Teachers will be sourced from the local community and government networks, ensuring that students receive quality instruction while rebuilding their academic futures.
MORE ABOUT this project
The WASH facility will restore access to basic sanitation, crucial for the health and well-being of the students. With this infrastructure in place, the local government’s mid-day meal programme can resume, addressing severe malnutrition that has worsened since the pandemic. The initiative not only benefits the children but also their families, as parents can return to work, knowing their children are safe and cared for during school hours.
Through this project, we aim to provide a pathway for the community to recover and thrive. By restoring education and critical services, we are helping to rebuild the foundation for a brighter future for these children and their families. The impact of this initiative will resonate beyond the classroom, fostering long-term community resilience and development.
